The Work Without Worry Act would allow Americans with disabilities to take on employment opportunities without fear of losing social security benefits, known as disabled adult child (DAC) benefits.
In our current system, people with disabilities may lose DAC benefits if they begin working and earn more than the designated income limit. If the individual's parents have not yet received social security benefits and the adult child with a disability has a job that brings in more than $1,260 a month, they lose their eligibility for DAC and would be ineligible for the benefit once their parent retires. This creates a work disincentive. Families often worry that the wrong amount of income will cause their family members to lose DAC benefits, and this will discourage young adults with disabilities from working.
The Work Without Worry Act would ensure that young adults with disabilities have the opportunity to work and see if they can sustain themselves without losing their suitability for DAC benefits. More specifically, earnings from their labor will not preclude those with disabilities from recovering DAC if the individual meets the other eligibility requirements. The Work Without Worry Act treats all individuals’ disabilities that began before age 22 equitably, regardless of when their parents claim Social Security benefits.
This bill is estimated to better the material conditions and lives of nearly 6,000 individuals with disabilities over the next decade; individuals with disabilities will still have the important opportunity to explore employment opportunities without jeopardizing their financial security.
